Bacteriostatic Water vs. Sterile Water

Both are water for preparation — the difference is one preservative, and it decides the working life of a reconstituted vial.
Bacteriostatic water
Water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative suppresses bacterial growth across repeated septum punctures, which is what makes a multi-draw laboratory preparation practical: a conservative multi-week refrigerated window instead of a single session. This is the default diluent for peptide research preparations.
Sterile water
Water with nothing added. Perfectly appropriate for a preparation consumed in one session, and preferred where a procedure specifically excludes benzyl alcohol — but a preservative-free vial punctured repeatedly is a contamination experiment, not a preparation.
Practical notes
- Benzyl alcohol at preservative concentration is compatible with most, not all, sequences — check the compound's literature for known incompatibilities.
- Either way, the solution rules from the storage reference apply: refrigerate, protect from light, date the label, discard on cloudiness.
